Each year First Baptist Church of Black Mountain awards scholarships to members of the church and community members who are pursuing higher education. The application process is usually open beginning in late May or early June.
Please complete the online application by June 30, 2024 for consideration for this years scholarships.
FBC Scholarship Information
The Barbara Blizzard Orr Adult Continuing Education Scholarship – This scholarship was established as a memorial to Barbara Blizard Orr. Barbara’s life was a great example of faith to FBC and to the entire community. Her love of the Lord was evident in all aspects of her life. Also, her love of learning was evident when she made the decision to continue her education and, over many obstacles, excelled as a student at Western Carolina. This scholarship will be given to a student who is an active member of FBC Black Mountain, who is 25 years of age and fits one of the following categories: a) an individual returning to school after atleast one year of previous higher education, b) an individual who has had no previous higher education, or c) an adult who needs further higher education for a career change.
The Gary and Ruby Carson Scholarship – Gary Carson was an exemplary Christian at church and at the high school where he taught. Likewise, Ruby Carson is such a wonderful example to all of us of what it means to serve Christ by living a life that puts others before self. This scholarship was established as a memorial to Gary and Ruby. This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating high school senior who is an exemplary Christian in school and church and is an active, faithful member of FBC or who is not a member of FBC but who is active in the various ministries at FBC.
The R.G. Summey Scholarship- This scholarship will be given to an active member of FBC Black Mountain who is pursuing a degree in a type of Christian ministry. If no church member is seeking that type of degree, it should be given to the applicant who is currently involved in a type of ministry that honors Christ’s commandments in Matthew 22:37-39 to love God first and then others as yourself.
The Andrew Thomas Schaich Language and Cultures Scholarship – This scholarship was established to honor the life of the son of the late Norm and Michele Schaich, Andrew Schaich. Andrew was baptized at First Baptist Black Mountain at 6 years of age. Andrew was gifted with learning languages and especially loved Latin culture. He was fluent in Spanish. Andrew excelled as a student at North Greenville University, where he was selected by the faculty as the Outstanding International Business Student of 2019-2020. He graduated in 2019 with a degree in International Business. Andrew went on to enlist in the Army, where he studied at the Defense Language Institute in Monterey, CA to be a French Linguist. When he passed to his heavenly home, Andrew was working on his Master’s degree in Global Security at Arizona State University.
General Scholarships will be awarded to active members of First Baptist Church, or to non-members who are active in a local church.
